Guatemala 2012

Join St. Francis Spanish students on a trip to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala where students will have an amazing experience actively taking part in a language learning experience! Weekdays, students will experience the city with teachers from the oldest and most established high school Spanish and travel program in Guatemala. Weekends will include extended excursions in Guatemala.

The Spanish immersion program is fully accredited by the Secretary of Education of Guatemala. The program caters to the special needs of high school students studying Spanish, doing volunteer work in small communities, and traveling with educational purposes. The unique location of Quetzaltenango (called "zyea-la-hoo" by locals) provides an urban experience with many indigenous communities in the surrounding area.

Immersion teachers from Guatemala each have a degree in secondary education and extensive experience teaching Spanish as a second language using top down methodology and providing an atmosphere where the spirit of the city and surrounding villages becomes the classroom for the students. High School students will visit villages, cities, cultural centers, climb volcanoes, hike in the mountains, and learn how to dance salsa, merengue, and cumbia.

The cost of three weeks of Spanish classes, traveling in the country, living with a Guatemalan family, daily social and cultural activities and airfare from Minneapolis is about $2,900.00 per student. The dates are June 11, 2012, through July 2, 2012.
